Recovery Shouldn't Have to Wait
Janice was expecting a visit from her daughter, Shawnta, when she received a phone call that every parent fears. Shawnta had been involved in a hit-and-run crash that left her with serious injuries, including a broken hip and ankle.
Without insurance, Shawnta was suddenly facing costly car repairs, mounting medical bills, and the difficult reality of an uncertain road to recovery.
“She called me crying, asking, ‘Who’s going to help me? I don’t know how this is going to work,’” Janice recalled.
With Shawnta’s discharge from Stroger Cook County Hospital facing delays without the essential equipment needed for recovery at home, they were referred to Devices 4 the Disabled.
Soon after, Janice arrived at D4D’s warehouse in Chicago's Brighton Park, where the equipment Shawnta needed to safely return home was available.
Pictured above, Robbie O’Shea, PT, DPT, PhD, Director of Clinical Services at D4D, reviews the equipment with Janice during her visit and explains how to safely use each item at home.
“This was truly a blessing,” Janice shared with a smile of relief, knowing her daughter could now safely return home with the equipment needed to support her recovery.
While the road to recovery will take time, having access to the proper equipment has helped give Shawnta greater safety, comfort, and independence as she heals at home.
For families navigating unexpected medical challenges, access to essential medical equipment can mean the difference between uncertainty and stability. Something as simple as a wheelchair, shower transfer bench, or commode can help make recovery safer, restore independence, and provide peace of mind during an already difficult time — helping families focus less on barriers and more on healing.
