Laverne has always been someone who brings people together. Whether organizing events, supporting others, or staying active in her community, helping people connect has long been part of who she is.

When chronic back pain began limiting her mobility, everyday activities became more difficult. Through a referral from the University of Chicago Medical Center, Laverne connected with Devices 4 the Disabled and received a power scooter that helped restore her independence and ability to stay engaged in the activities she enjoys.

The best part? During Governors State University's Physical Therapy Neurorehabilitation Course Day of Learning at D4D, Laverne became the "teacher." As Doctor of Physical Therapy students and faculty gained hands-on experience working alongside individuals who rely on mobility equipment, Laverne shared her experiences and perspective. The experience helped students connect classroom learning with real-world practice while deepening their understanding of accessibility, mobility, and independence.

Laverne's enthusiasm and energy gave students a firsthand glimpse into how mobility can influence participation, independence, and community engagement. Through conversations and shared experiences, they saw how access to the right equipment can have a meaningful impact on an individual's quality of life.

For Laverne, the power scooter provided greater freedom and mobility. Looking ahead to an upcoming parade, she shared her excitement that she would now be able to get around with ease. For the students, the experience offered valuable insight into the role healthcare professionals can play in helping individuals remain active, connected, and engaged in their communities.

Her story demonstrates how learning, collaboration, and access can create lasting impact for both individuals and future healthcare professionals.
