A New Kind of Freedom - Khiree's Story

After a spinal cord injury changed the course of his life, Khiree found himself facing more than physical limitations—he was up against daily barriers to connection, mobility, and simply participating in everyday life. Relying on others for even the smallest things, freedom felt distant.

Getting to medical appointments was a struggle. Attending social events felt impossible. Daily routines at home placed a heavy burden on his family. And like so many, Khiree was navigating his daily reality without the much-needed essential equipment and support he needed to be able to live life more on his terms.

A rainy day would typically keep him inside, but not this time. Khiree showed up for his appointment at Devices 4 the Disabled, and possibilities became real.

Thanks to the support of our donors, Khiree received a specialized wheelchair tailored to his needs—offering comfort, safety, and a new level of freedom, allowing him to access places he has not been able to go. Now he will be able to visit friends, get to appointments, and attend events in the community with less struggle—and more like a step toward rediscovering freedom with access to the right equipment.

But the impact didn’t stop there.

Khiree’s mother also received specialized transfer equipment to help her safely assist her son at home—relieving physical strain and offering peace of mind.

And perhaps most meaningful of all: Khiree found connection.

While D4D staff made adjustments to his wheelchair, two D4D volunteers, Misa and Edgar, spent time talking with Khiree about accessible transportation options in the city. Together, they connected him to resources that will allow him to navigate the city in a way that accommodates his new chair—and his future.

“I thought I was just getting a wheelchair. But all this gives me more freedom.” – Khiree

Real freedom is often found in the everydaythe ability to move through your world on your own terms, make your own plans, and feel seen, not sidelined.

With the right equipment and the right support, freedom becomes more than a possibility—it becomes a way forward.
