Several years ago, a mountain biking accident left David with a spinal cord injury. Today, the right equipment can give him more ways to stay active, build strength, and support his mobility and independence at home.
David and his wife, Shirley, came to Devices 4 the Disabled looking for solutions. One of their needs was equipment that could make getting in and out of the car safer and reduce some of the lifting required of Shirley. David was also looking for ways to support standing and exercise at home.
Before his visit, David shared what he hoped having access to a stander could help make possible:
“Your help is needed to get me back on my feet.”
During his visit to D4D, David explored several pieces of equipment to see what might work for him at home. Among them was a stander that would give him another way to stand and exercise regularly.
As he tried the stander, his reaction was immediate.
“This is fantastic, absolutely fantastic.”
David also emphasized that having a stander at home would benefit not only him, but Shirley, his wife and caregiver.
“It takes a piece of equipment like this to really get you back on your feet,” he said.
Thinking about what having this equipment at home could mean, David put it simply:
“For me, this is going to change my life.”
For David and Shirley, access can mean a safer transfer. A way to stand and exercise at home. Less lifting for Shirley. And more ways for David to support his strength, mobility, and independence as part of everyday life.
